Slave

Recently I had to read the book Slave for a language course that I took. It is a story of a young girl about 12 and her life story. It all started when her village was attacked. The parents were all killed and the children were rounded up, beaten, raped and then sold into slavery. Her book goes on to tell about how they treated her. It tells detailed facts about the sexual and mental abuse that she sustained while a slave. It recounts the savage way in which the Nuba and their ancient culture are being destroyed by a secret modern-day trade in slaves. Most of all, it is a remarkable testimony to one young woman's unbreakable spirit and tremendous courage. I encourage anyone to read it. It really got me thinking about how good I had things in my life. I can't believe that these things are still going on even though slavery is illegal in the United States. The thing I really remember about this book is the detail. In some parts there is more detail then I ever cared to know: how they cercomsize a girl. I didn't even know that you could do that but believe me they do it in the Nuba village. They also told in great detail the raping, and beating scenes. It is disturbing, however it really adds to the story and gets you to understand really what she went through.

wow, it is suprising to hear that kind of stuff is still going on. Not only is it illegal but it is also a cultural taboo.
